Mod Ideas/Spelling

Mod ideas for UT 2003 – Letters and Spelling

Description

A mod for my 2 and 3 year old daughters - so that I don't have to keep saying "no" everytime they ask to play Half-Life or Jedi Knight 2 (particularly the 3 year old).

The whole mod is based around a single level. The level itself has doors, ramps, jumps, etc etc but nothing that will actually kill the player or get them completely stuck.

In the center of the level are three slots for "letter objects". Above the slots is a big screen. A Picture of an object is displayed on the screen (of say a dog). The player has to navigate around the level and collect the right letters for the objects name (in this case d, o, and g) and place them in the central slots in the correct order. Only one letter can be carried at a time.

It occurs to me that since my kids currently can't acutally recognise many letters that I probably ought to have a game mode where a voice simply asks for a letter. They then have to find the letter being asked for, collect it and deposit it at a central point (maybe to get a Tweenies sample or something).

Letters are picked up automatically when they are walked over. If the letter touched is not needed then they'll be told the name of the letter they just touched and then told that they don't need that one.

Letters are dropped when the correct slot for them is touched. Letters can also be dropped at the press of the left mouse button.

The level structures for the mod need to be small, quite open and simple but yet look engaging. There should be no tricky jumps or lifts as these things could confuse the target audience. Slopes and steps are fine, as are doors. The levels should also be fairly well lit and bright. No sinister scary shadows here. There should be no way the player can damage themselves in any way (by falling for example).

Letters should be spawned randomly around the map and will move every 60 seconds.

Interested Scripters

If you are interested in developing this mod for UT2003 then add your name to the list. Once you start development you should indicate that below (and hopefully include a link to a journal page). Before you start development you should also check this section to see if anyone else has started.

  • EntropicLqd – I wouldn't mind a crack at this one - it'll keep my daughter happy in a non-violent way.

Discussion

EntropicLqd: The actual implementation needs a little more thought but the basic idea seems to be sound. It's also a cunning way of upgrading my "other" computer with the wife's blessing, "It's educational dear" :).

Tarquin: That sounds like a cool idea. I'm afraid I can't resist the comedy idea that springs to mind (it's the polish ancestry, we can't resist a joke. that's my excuse anyway. what's the Polish definition of a 7-course meal? 6-pack of beer and a potato.) FPS aimed at kids could be a great new area of games: Sesame Street presents: Big Bird says "die, bitch" ... kidding :D

EntropicLqd: lol.
